Next New

A new type of new media that I would like to suggest is the use of VR technology as a replacement for in-class lectures within colleges and universities. The VR technology would be able to place students and the lecturer into a virtual classroom, as long as the attendees have access to the internet. The lecturer will be able to interact with students, as they normally would in the classroom. They would also be able to perform demonstrations, and labs, with ease as the virtual world allows for simulation of activities that are not limited to reality. With a virtual classroom, students will be able to attend class without having to travel, which may also allow for students to attend classes without living on-campus. By using such technologies, we would be able to increase accessibility and provide opportunities to individuals with restrictive circumstances.

  1. It would be great to see VR be used for education and be part of the curriculum as it offers new ways and experiences for students to learn. However, when I was doing research on VR for the term paper, I found out that there were symptoms related to motion sickness when using these devices. This creates a lot of risk for institutions to implement this technology, but VR is still developing so one day we'll hopefully see virtual classrooms be more prevalent.

  2. This new media would be a game changer with educational institutions. Once they advance VR so the user doesn't have motion sickness, I can see this being implemented. Simulation in labs would be difficult to do unless they figure out a way so the user could use their hands instead of a handheld device.

  3. That's actually a great idea to use VR for educational purposes. For those students that strictly use fully online courses, having a VR class would make it easier for them as well. This would enable a virtual classroom that could foster practically the same values that an in-class discussion could have. This eliminates the need to commute, or if anything it could be a great alternative for the hybrid classes. In which you would only have to come in for test days.
